Ashton Fonville is our Summer 2020 intern for the North Carolina Literary Map which is a living, searchable site of the state’s authors, books, and bookstores, and all things literary! Their mission is “to highlight the literary heritage of the state by connecting the lives and creative work of authors to their real (and imaginary) locations. Through the development of a searchable and browseable data-driven online map, users are able to access a database, learning tools, and cultural resources, to deepen their understanding of specific authors as well as the cultural space that shaped these literary works”. Ashton promotes the map by posting daily to all social media accounts and communicating with the map team about updates to the map.
She is learning a lot about posting to social media on an organization’s behalf – specifically Twitter, Facebook, & Instagram. She is also using Hootsuite, (a scheduling app) to help schedule her daily postings. In addition to these, Ashton has been blogging and scheduling Zoom & Google Meet meetings with the NC Literary Map Team. Furthermore, Ashton pulls social media analytics and insights, analyzes the results, and enters the data in a Google form to record. She believes the use of these technologies will help her promote future organizations she works for and help engage patrons.
Ashton is halfway through her graduate program in UNCG’s Masters of Library and Information Science program. She is interested in archives and public libraries. She serves as the UNCG SLA chapter’s social media coordinator and in Summer 2019, she interned at the Latimer House and Lower Cape Fear Historical Society’s archives and library in Wilmington, NC. Ashton previously worked as an elementary school teacher in North Carolina. She also helped build this website. She loves reading, listening to podcasts, and nature hikes with her husband.
